In 2011 California, Murshida Va, a Sufi teacher and musician, learned the Cannabis Underground was so large that the Feds had no interest in transactions of less than 100 lbs. and many jurisdictions didn’t consider under 40 lbs. significant. In a tiny, dusty Texas town at the Mexican border, she learned what it was like to wear handcuffs and a striped jumpsuit. She also learned that the Mexican Cartel was using slave labor in their marijuana fields, murdering people who tried to escape, and dumping 8-9 dismembered bodies into the river on the American side every weekend. Except that weekend— that weekend the body count wasn’t 8 or 9. It was 53.”
In 2012, as DEA agents went on a rampage, busting up legal medical dispensaries and “grows” in California, she lay beneath a paper-thin sheet in a freezing Richmond County, Georgia jail and had a vision— a vision of a great, green ocean, an underground ocean so vast that all of the actions of Criminal Justice amounted to little more than the games of children on a beach, scooping buckets of water out of the waves…
